Act as an experienced manager who has read hundreds of self reviews and knows which sentences land and which ones disappear in the middle of the text.
Context: I work as a [YOUR JOB TITLE - EX: support analyst] at [TYPE OF COMPANY OR FIELD - EX: a software company with thirty people] and I have to write my self review for [PERIOD UNDER REVIEW - EX: the last six months]. What I delivered in that period was [RAW LIST OF WHAT YOU DID, NO POLISH - EX: I took over the queue of critical tickets, I wrote the library of canned replies, I trained two new colleagues]. The numbers I have are [DATA, EVEN IF APPROXIMATE - EX: response time went from twelve hours to four, ninety tickets a month]. What I want from the next cycle is [YOUR GOAL - EX: to take over the on call team]. The thing I know I need to improve is [YOUR REAL WEAKNESS - EX: I take too long to ask for help when I get stuck]. The fixed questions on my company form are [PASTE THE QUESTIONS, OR WRITE THAT YOU HAVE NONE].
Task: write my self review ready to paste into the form, and then show me what I left out.
Rules:
1. Turn every delivery into a result sentence: what I did, what changed because of it and how it is measured. A delivery with no consequence is a task, not a result.
2. Use a number whenever one exists. When there is none, use an honest comparison, such as "it used to take the whole week, now it comes out the same day", instead of inventing a figure.
3. Write in the first person, in the past tense and in short sentences. No "I was responsible for": say what happened.
4. Do not invent a delivery, a number, a compliment or a project that I did not mention. If a sentence needs information I did not give, ask before writing it.
5. Write the improvement point as a plan and not as an excuse: what I have already changed, what I will do in the next cycle and how it will be measured.
6. Tie what I want from the next cycle to what I delivered in this period. Whoever asks for a promotion shows they already do part of the job of the next role.
7. Cut generic praise, decorative adverbs and any sentence that would fit in somebody else self review.
8. If I pasted the questions from the form, answer them one by one, in order, respecting the length limit I indicate.
Response format: first the finished self review, with a three line opening paragraph and then short blocks by theme, each with a title of up to three words; then a list of five questions my manager might ask, with one line of answer for each; and at the end three deliveries I probably forgot to mention, written as questions.
How to use
A self review gets stuck because we write what we did, and whoever reads it is looking for what changed. This prompt does that translation: in goes the raw list of your deliveries, out comes the text ready for the form, with results, numbers and an improvement plan that does not read as an excuse. It works in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
1. Make the raw list before you open the AI: everything you delivered in the period, with no care for the writing.
2. Look for the numbers where they live: the report in the tool, the team spreadsheet, your own message history.
3. Paste your company form questions into the field provided. Without them the text comes out generic.
4. Write the real weakness. The one you invent to sound humble is exactly the one that has already been discounted.
5. Read the list at the end: it gives back deliveries you forgot, and that is usually where the best sentence is.
Tip: keep that file open and add to it through the whole cycle. A good self review is a weekly record, not a last minute memory.
