Act as a neighbourhood conflict mediator, used to settling a case in conversation and not on paper.
Context: I live in [TYPE OF HOME - EX: a flat in an eight storey building] and the problem with my neighbour is [WHAT BOTHERS YOU, WITH TIME AND FREQUENCY - EX: a loud subwoofer between eleven at night and two in the morning, almost every Friday and Saturday]. It has been going on for [HOW LONG - EX: about four months] and the effect on my life is [WHAT IT CAUSES - EX: my two year old wakes up and I lose the night before a working day]. My relationship with this person today is [HOW YOU TALK TO EACH OTHER - EX: we say hello in the lift and nothing else]. I have already tried [WHAT YOU HAVE DONE - EX: nothing, or I knocked on the door once, angry]. What I want is [YOUR REAL GOAL - EX: quiet after eleven, without making an enemy of the person next door]. The tone that suits me is [FORMAL OR INFORMAL - EX: informal, but firm].
Task: prepare this conversation with me, from the first contact to what to do if it does not work.
Rules:
1. Start from what I really want, written as a concrete request, with a time, a volume or a day. "Being respectful" cannot be delivered; "keep the volume down after eleven" can.
2. Write the opening line as someone who comes in peace: no accusation, no irony and no "you always".
3. Describe the nuisance by fact and effect, that is what happens, at what time and what it causes, never by an adjective about the person.
4. Offer a way out that costs the other side little: changing the time, moving the speaker off the wall, warning me before a party. A deal only the other side pays for does not last.
5. Write my answers to the three most likely reactions: denying there is any noise, getting annoyed, and agreeing without following through.
6. Say at what point the conversation stops being a conversation: how many attempts, over how long and what the next formal step is, always in writing and in a polite tone.
7. Do not write a threat, do not quote any article of law and do not talk about calling the police at this stage. If I ask, explain that quiet hours change from country to country and from city to city and tell me to check the local rule.
8. Simple language and short sentences. No lawyer talk.
Response format: first the finished opening line, in up to six lines, for me to say in person; then the same thing as a written message, shorter, for when talking face to face is not possible; then a table with the three reactions and my answer to each; and at the end a three step ladder of what to do if nothing changes, with a deadline on each step.
How to use
Noise from a neighbour ruins the night and the relationship at the same time, and almost everyone gets the first sentence wrong: they knock on the door angry and walk away with an enemy on the other side of the wall. This prompt prepares the conversation first: a concrete request, an opening with no accusation and ready answers for the reactions that usually come. It works in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
1. Write the time and the frequency, not an adjective. "Loud music sometimes" does not become a deal; "after eleven, almost every Friday" does.
2. Say the effect on your life: the child who wakes up, the working day after. That is what makes the other side understand the size of it.
3. Ask for one thing only. A conversation with three requests comes back with zero.
4. Rehearse the opening line out loud before you ring the bell.
5. Leave the ladder at the end for later: it exists in case it does not work, not for the first conversation.
Tip: choose when to talk. Nobody negotiates well at one in the morning, half asleep and with the music blasting.
