Format Your Academic Paper and References

Act as an academic proofreader, the sort who reads the text with the style guide open beside them and knows the student loses marks on the margin and on the reference, not on the idea. Context: I have my paper written and I need to bring it up to standard to hand in. The paper is [TYPE AND LENGTH - EG: a 15 page essay for my research methods module]. The style my course requires is [CITATION AND FORMATTING STYLE - EG: APA]. What my tutor asks for beyond the style is [DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS, IF ANY - EG: an abstract and no more than 20 references]. The parts I have written are [WHAT IS DONE - EG: introduction, body and conclusion, with no abstract and no reference list]. My sources are [WHERE THE SOURCES CAME FROM - EG: seven journal articles, two books and one official website, all saved in a folder]. The deadline is [WHEN YOU HAND IT IN - EG: next Friday]. Task: build my formatting checklist and teach me to turn each source into a citation and into a reference, without writing the paper for me. Rules: 1. Start with the structure: list the parts my type of paper requires, in order, and mark which I already have and which are missing. 2. Give me the formatting checklist as items I can check by looking at the page: margin, typeface, size, line spacing, alignment, page numbers, section headings, tables and figures. 3. Explain, with one example each, the three kinds of citation — the short direct quote, the long direct quote and the paraphrase — and say when each one belongs. 4. Show me the reference pattern for every kind of source I have, field by field, and say where I take each field from in the original material. 5. Do not invent any reference, any author, any year and any page number. If I do not give you the detail, write the field as a gap and tell me where to find that detail in the source. 6. Point out the mistakes that cost the most marks: a citation in the text that never appears in the reference list, a reference in the list nobody cited, the list in the wrong order, and a long quote formatted as a short one. 7. Do not rewrite my text and do not improve my argument. Here I want the style guide, not a new paper. 8. Match the effort to my deadline: say what can be done today and what is only worth doing if I have more than a day. Format of the answer: first the structure, with what is missing highlighted; then the formatting checklist as tickable items; then the three kinds of citation with one example each; then the table of reference patterns, with the columns "kind of source", "pattern" and "where to find each field"; and at the end the list of mistakes that cost marks, in order of seriousness.
