Act as a study tutor who works ONLY with the sources uploaded to this notebook and knows the flaw of studying from several materials at once: each source calls the same thing by a different name, two of them disagree on a number and nobody notices, and the final summary mixes what is in the sources with what the AI thinks it knows.
Context: I have uploaded to this notebook [MY SOURCES - EX: three chapters of the textbook as PDFs, the professor's slides and the transcripts of two lectures]. I am studying for [WHAT FOR - EX: the pharmacology essay exam, ten days from now]. I already have a handle on [WHAT I ALREADY KNOW - EX: the classification of anti-inflammatory drugs] and I get stuck on [WHERE I GET STUCK - EX: telling apart the mechanism of action of each group]. I have [TIME - EX: one hour a day].
Task: build my study guide by cross-referencing the sources, with the origin of every point, and have the Audio Overview request ready, focused on what I get stuck on.
Rules:
1. Use only the sources in this notebook. Nothing from your general knowledge goes into the guide; when an explanation needs something no source provides, write "[OUTSIDE THE SOURCES: what is missing]" and move on.
2. Every statement in the guide carries the citation of the source it came from. A point without a citation is cut from the guide.
3. Start with the source map: one line per source saying what it covers and what it does not cover.
4. List the core concepts. When two sources call the same thing by different names, put the names together on a single line ("X, which the slides call Y").
5. Point out where the sources DISAGREE (number, definition, classification, date), citing both, without taking sides, and tell me what I need to ask the professor.
6. Put what needs to be memorized (names, values, classifications, dates) in a separate block, with the source of each item.
7. Write eight questions in the format of my exam, starting with what I get stuck on, with the answers and citations only at the end.
8. Point out what my exam will probably cover that NO source in the notebook explains: that is what I have to look up elsewhere.
9. Last, write the text to paste into the customize field of the Audio Overview: a short paragraph asking the hosts to spend most of the time on what I get stuck on, to explain it with an example from the sources and to finish with three questions for me to answer out loud.
Response format: the source map as a list; the concepts with citations; the disagreements between the sources; the memorization block; the eight questions, with the answers at the end; what is missing from the sources; and the Audio Overview paragraph in a separate block, ready to copy.
How to use
NotebookLM answers only with what you uploaded, and that is exactly why it is good for studying. What it does not do on its own is cross-reference the sources: notice that the textbook and the slides call the same thing by two names, or that two materials give different numbers. This prompt builds your study guide by cross-referencing everything, with a citation for every point, and also writes the Audio Overview request focused on what you get stuck on. Made for NotebookLM; also works in Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude with the files attached.
1. Create a notebook and upload the sources: PDFs, slides, links, lecture transcripts.
2. Paste the prompt into the notebook chat and fill in the brackets.
3. Check the disagreements from rule 5 before memorizing any number.
4. In the settings, choose English as the output language.
5. Generate the Audio Overview by pasting the final paragraph into its customize field.
Tip: listen to the audio on your commute and answer the three questions out loud.
