Most people talk to ChatGPT the way they text a colleague: they ask for something vague, get a vague answer back and conclude the tool is no use for their case. The problem is almost never the AI. It is the request.

A prompt that works does three things a generic request does not. It gives context (who you are, what you sell, to whom), it defines the format of the answer (a list of five, a two paragraph text, a table) and it sets a constraint that keeps the cliché away (“no jargon”, “no promising results”, “40 words maximum”). The prompts below already come with all three. You only change what is in brackets.

For people who sell or provide a service

This is the fastest growing part of the catalogue, and not by chance: these are situations that come up every week and that stop a lot of people the moment they have to write.

Three things that apply to any prompt

Answer the questions it asks. Several of these prompts start by asking for information. If you skip that part and say “just go ahead”, the answer comes back generic, because generic is the only thing possible without your data.

Ask for another go. The first answer is rarely the good one. “Make it shorter”, “make it less enthusiastic” and “give me three different versions” solve almost everything.

Read it before you send it. Nothing that comes out of an AI should reach a customer unread. That goes double for numbers, deadlines and anything with a price on it.
